The Pumlumon Challenge 2009
The fifth Pumlumon Challenge took place in the Cambrian Mountain range on September 12th 2009.
The event started and finished at the Nant yr Arian Forestry Centre (Map Ref. SN 717 813) approx. 8 miles east of Aberystwyth on the A44. The route was over the Pumlumon hills passing the source of the Wye and the Severn. It passed through the Hengwm and Hirnant valleys, around Nantymoch dam before returning to the Vistor Centre.
Martin Beale was set on winning this year, and he did !!
He completed another tough challenge in a time of 4hr 19min. In glorious weather he was kept honest by Hugh Aggleton finishing two minutes behind. The two were side by side for most of the event, but Matin’s quest for a win saw him move up a gear over the final few miles. Paul Dickens came in 3rd under with a time under 5hrs. These three qualified for the gold medal.
Disappointed not to beat 5hrs (gold standard) were Paul Dickens, Stuart Walker and Ozzy Kershaw, due to a navigational error over the last few miles.
The best lady was local Louise Barker with a time of 5.23 followed by Norway resident Wendy Fjellstad.
Having a bad day was Simon Berry, feeling under the weather, leaving his mark on the scenery as he struggled along.
Another great event deserving of more entries.
